messaging (voice and email), location-based services etc. This approach allows wireless service providers to open
up their networks to hundreds and thousands of content and application providers much like the Internet.
Finally, there are lots of different standards for cellular communication. This provides the

ability to ensure that the data networking and applications operate transparently across all of the standards.
Imagine propagating the dual and trimodal phone model into the data networking area - it would impede the development
of new services and the use of services.
