When Cisco and Motorola, industry leaders in Internet and other networking technologies, and in wireless communications respectively, announced a pact to spend a billion dollars over the next four years it was a lead story in all the media from CNN's MoneyLine program to Reuters News Agency to
InfoWorld Magazine's Web edition. A new wireless Internet. New access technology? This all sounded right up our street, so we decided to investigate. We talked with Jon Shantz, vice president of business development for Cisco.

   

How does this proposed new wireless technology compare to, differ from or improve upon what's already about there, for example the Nokia 9000 series, or Tele2's Advanced Digital Wireless network and other such wireless data and voice technologies.

Data networking and access to the Internet is one of the new initiatives affecting the wireless industry. Most companies are planning to overlay some level of low speed data networking capability. The Cisco/Motorola initiative includes the initial low-speed capabilities but provides for the use of Internet type of core network technology that will make it easy for wireless operators to provide Internet services directly and enables
