New Last Scott Novel Published

23 April, 2004 -

Only a scant fortnight since the publication of a new Kipling "Stalky & Co" adventure, an unfinished novel by Sir Walter Scott is published today by Edinburgh University Press. Written in the year before he died,
Reliquiae Trotcosienses: The Gabions of the Late Jonathan Oldbuck Esq of Monkbarns, was edited for its first publication by Scott scholars, Dr Alison Lumsden of Aberdeen University, and Dr Gerard Carruthers of Glasgow University.

Although the author of
Rob Roy and Guy Mannering or The Astrologer, and, of course Ivanhoe had suffered several strokes by the time he wrote this "semi-fictional" 100-page manuscript, the book shows he still retained much of his mental capacity. The novel was the result of Scott's being commissioned to write an account of Abbotsford near Melrose, the author's former home. However, instead of a guide book, he wrote a work of semi-fiction in which he simultaneously mocked and exhibited his own bibliophilia and antiquarian knowledge.

More Bus Books

19 April, 2004 - We've added about another hundred of the bus books from the collection of the late Graham Humphreys. Humphreys died in February. An employee of the West Midlands Metro at the time, he'd spent his entire working life working in public transport. He loved his work and his thirst for knowledge about it was un-quenchable. When he died in his early 50s, he left a collection of several hundred volumes about buses, coaches, bus companies and everything else bus-related.

The books include series from Ian Allan, The Transportation Publishing Company, The P. S. V. Circle's Fleet Histories and others. Authors include such luminaries as Alan Townsin, Gavin Booth, Malcolm Keeley and Michael Eyre, to name a very few.

With another 200 or so books yet to list, the first lot of volumes is now online and can be browsed here.
