Although expressing an apparent (albeit obvious) preference
for the xDSL-family of technologies, the second choice of the approximately 50 delegates to the recent Third Annual
Access Technologies conference in London was Wireless Local Loop (WLL) technology. The general consensus among
delegates was also that there will be no winners, although there may be a few losers in the high-speed access sweepstakes.

The delegates represented a wide mix of types of companies,
from telcos to cellphone companies, from cable to World Wide Web portal companies. Their preference (in a show
of hands, informal vote) was for xDSL with wireless technologies coming in a fairly close second.
In an interview with FastLane, Leif Aarthun Ims, senior research scientist with Telenor, Norway's national telco,
discussed his belief that regardless of chosen technology, implementing one of the plethora of new high-speed access
technologies will be expensive.
